The thirteenth card of the Major Arcana, Death is perhaps the most misunderstood card in the tarot. It very rarely indicates physical death. Instead, it represents the necessary, unavoidable endings that precede every meaningful transformation. The caterpillar must dissolve entirely within the chrysalis before the butterfly can emerge; the seed must crack open before the tree can grow.

Associated with Scorpio, the sign of depth, intensity, and regeneration, this card carries the full power of the transformative waters. When Death appears, something in your life is ending — a relationship, a belief system, an identity, a career chapter. Resisting this ending will only prolong your suffering. Reversed Death indicates fierce resistance to an ending already underway.
